General Stuff, and Other Things…

So, I’ve already mentioned that I’m stoked that Boston has won the NBA title… but there are other things going on, too…

I have signed up at GoodReads, after reading about it at Neil Gaiman’s site. I’m not sure how frequently I will be updating it… it would take me a loooooooong time to try and track through all of the books that I have read, and have in the collection to read, but I can definitely see updating for the “Have Read” section as I complete books.

The “script” writing group met last night, and things went well… we each selected a prompt idea to work with for one of our July meetings, and discussed a couple of short stories that were submitted. There is another group that I am going to be checking out late next week (which is why I use the “script” label – as we were all in a script class together).

Have I mentioned that Boston won…. title number 17?

And I have been making some steady progress towards “the 300 club”… which I plan on continuing this afternoon. I’m currently working on a script, inspired by a song that I like… more as an exercise for me, than anything else… I’m not quite sure about it being produced (rights, etc.)… not to mention the length may be a little off… on the shorter side… but it’s something that’s been rattling around (for a while, actually), so I feel it’s best to try and get it out… and I have a really big reason to, now.

Oh, and “the Boston Celtics are once again the world champions.”

On a serious turn… really… Today would be Jenn’s birthday… she would have been 28. I know her mom has really been having a bit of a rough patch for the past week…

Where I Talk About the Projects

As I mentioned here, I have a couple of projects that I am working on…

I have a short story that was written shortly after the initial Writer’s meeting, and really want to continue working with some shorter works… Even if they turn out to only be a few pages, trying to get them to really “fire” well is a skill that I want to continue to work with.

Aside from that story, though, I have started two “longer” works… not sure if they will turn into books, novellas… or even if I will need to change the medium (currently as prose, but wondering if I may need to reformat them… but I need to write the story, first)… So far I have only established the principle character (and a few minor characters, for the sake of the scenes that were written)…

While coming back from lunch today, though, I was pondering an idea for a graphic novel/comic script, and kept thinking about something with a werewolf or catlike person… Maybe something like a version of the Hulk (possibly a pseudo-controlled transformation)…. like a crime-fighter type… Hmmm

I also have three “new” script ideas (previously unworked) – two are shorter works, one would be a science-fiction type of feature film.

There are also two other scripts that have been “sort-of” started to work on… “Four Corners” (the one I started for my class), and another one that I started working on with Ben (Yes, the one with the broken link in my “Sites Visited” section). The later does have some notes stored, but no actual scenes/dialogue written.

Then there are my two previous NaNo projects that I intend to revisit… one that was a solo project, and the second that started as a collaborative work with Chris…

I also have the “Contact Center” project that I had started… I am thinking about changing the format to a screenplay, but I think I want to try doing “both” – write both the script and the long story for it. I definitely think it will work well as a script (the way I am thinking through it), and I may end up writing more script than go back and fill in the long form.

But last night, despite my trek into the office during the game I didn’t get any writing done… I had planned on using my shiny, only-used-a-few-times fountain pen to do some scribing, but it wouldn’t write… and I tried changing the ink cartridge, and it still wouldn’t write… So I figured that maybe it just needed to be cleaned, so I proceeded to carry the tip downstairs so I could let it soak in some warm water…

Once I submerged the tip in the warm water, it looked like a squid had just launched itself… black swirls spewed from the tip as the (presumably dried) ink was reinvigorated and found the openings around the tip…

Newly distracted, I turned the came back on (as described before), and continued watching… I did, however, make some notes about the projects, and ask myself some questions… I think I have figured out part of a schedule, so I can try to focus my efforts for a little while…

Now to print a calendar so I can keep track of myself…

I really am looking forward to having several works going at once… partially for the challenge of pulling it off, but it will also give me a chance to switch gears… If something sticks and becomes more compelling for me to work with, then obviously I will be channeling efforts to that project. But for those moments when one project stalls, I will have something else I can try working with…

300 – update…

I have officially entered the “crunch time” if I want to complete the 300 by 30th… So far, things have been going rather *meh*… not great strides in pages, but I have manged to start work on several different projects (which, I guess, makes things a little easier at the moment… but we shall see how things fare before too long)…

All of the new “works in progress” are just that – new. They may be ideas that I have kicked around for a little while, but they are all being written or worked on for the first time. I have been thinking, though, about how I would need to make my notes, designating the “new” pages, if I wanted to add to existing works (like the aforementioned NaNo projects)….

But I am writing, and that is the important part…

The 300 Club…

Here is my goal… something I was thinking about over the weekend.

The Spartans had 300. Frank Miller had 300 (which I have neither read, nor watched). Bowling Alleys have 300 Clubs. Wil Wheaton had 300 (of which I am somewhere in the mid-100’s, I think). Now it is my turn… sort of.

Between now and the end of September, I want/plan to complete 300 pages of “new” writing – anything from scripts, to short stories, to longer works. I saw “new”, to mean that if it was written before today, that’s fine – I can add to and expand it, rework it… whatever – as long as there are 300 pages that had not existed before June 10th-ish (old NaNo projects, I am looking at you).

The numbers were somewhat arbitrary… I thought the end of a month would be good, and I like how NaNo and ScriptFrenzy are both done in 30 day months – so I picked September. And 300 seemed to fit well… In all, it breaks down to about 3 pages a day (which, across different mediums means different word counts), but it is the act of moving, and of writing…

And the footnote, nested way down in the subtext of this goal (like Congress passing another raise for themselves in an ecologically minded bill), is the writing of 1-2 blog posts per day. As a target, but that’s how it goes… Some maybe more, some (*gasp*) less, but writing, nonetheless.

So, off to the writing…
