I wouldn’t say I’m a hard-charging Johnny Cash person – I don’t have much in the library – but I grew up listening to some 8-tracks and cassettes on family trips. The special thing that Cash brought to some of his later recordings, of which this week’s selection is probably his most well known, is how when he covered a song he did it the right way. He didn’t just copy and re-record the original, he would re-arrange the music, strip it to the basics, and make it his own. That’s one of the signs of true musical talent.
